Ice Bubbles + From the Ferry

Ice Bubbles
It’s not often that I get to experience a ferry trip through crackling ice.
Inspired not only by the sound, but also by the stillness as the ship became enveloped in a frosty coat of mist on its short journey from Suomenlinna to Helsinki, I had the idea to create some imagery akin to that of Wormwood.

Some layered experiments with plucked overtones to depict the percussive nature of ice bubbles as they crack underneath the boat.
Some in ordinary tuning, and some in Scordatura.
By first glance, the latter ones (i.e. v3 and v4) in Scordatura are more interesting in terms of tonal variance - the slight inconsistencies in tuning are more indicative of crackling and bubbling.
Trace Contour
This series of images are representative of a portion of my experiments in Adobe Photoshop using the trace contour effect. I could see the emergence of overtone shapes forming through the colour distribution, and responded later with a painting of my own.
Ice Bubbles: Painting through sound
The image to the right is representative of my own interpretation of the above visual stimulus, painted after some initial experiments on the double bass (linked below). The layered acrylic ink, applied over the shapes (ice bubbles) in permanent marker signify the different sound layers, with a sense of angularity and brightness.
